When a buyer pulls up to your home, you have about three seconds to make a first impression. That’s the power of curb appeal — and in a market where most buyers fall in love (or click away) online first, it starts with the very first photo of your listing.
Why curb appeal sells Houston homes
The interior usually closes the deal, but the exterior decides whether a buyer walks through the door at all. A tired or overgrown front yard can make a buyer “drive on by” — or scroll right past your listing photo. The good news: most of what drives curb appeal is well within your control and doesn’t cost much.
Quick wins that make the biggest difference
- Tame the yard: mow, edge, weed, and lay fresh mulch. Keep the lawn green and the beds full of color while you’re on the market.
- Add balance and color: symmetry is pleasing — matching light fixtures or planters by the door, plus pots of flowering plants for instant life.
- Fix the small details: replace mismatched hardware, faded house numbers, and a worn welcome mat. Snap a photo before you shop so finishes match.
- Light it up: a little landscape lighting along the walkway transforms evening showings and drive-bys.
- Keep it low-maintenance: skip fussy plantings; today’s buyers favor a clean, natural look with hardy native plants.
Match the yard to your buyer
Think about who’s most likely to buy your home. Selling a four-bedroom in a family neighborhood? A tidy backyard with room to play is a real selling point. The front yard draws buyers in; the backyard helps hold their interest once they’re there.
Small details, big results
Often it’s the little things that decide how quickly a home sells. Part of my job is walking your property with you and pointing out the handful of changes that will matter most — and the ones that won’t be worth your time or money.
