John Paul Landing Park John Paul Landing Park Trail and Creek John Paul Landing Park is an 865 acre fishing and recreation destination that opened to the public during the summer of 2017. Harris County is currently working on the construction of a second phase of the park on its’ north side off Katy-Hockley Cut Off Rd. This second phase will include an environmental education center, an additional park area and a set of bridges and boardwalks to connect to the existing park development on the south side of the lake. How to Find John Paul Landing Park John Paul Landing Park is located in far NW Harris County in Cypress, TX. The park’s address is 24202 West Rd, approximately 2 miles west of the Grand Parkway and 6 miles south of Hwy 290. There are two separate parking lot areas off West Rd. The construction of the second phase of the park will include an entrance off Katy-Hockley Cut Off Rd with its own parking lot. John Paul Landing Park Features Playground and Picnic Areas at John Paul Landing Park The park currently has 2 playground areas, numerous picnic areas (some covered), restrooms, and paved walking trails. There are also 4 pavilions with barbecue facilities, each of which is able to be reserved through the Harris County Park’s Department. Amenities under development include lake boardwalks, fishing piers, the environmental education center and additional trails. The final length of walking trail is yet to be determined, but by the park’s size can be assumed to be many miles. The park is used quite extensively by local fishermen and its’ second phase is highly anticipated. Harris County MUD No 130 services the Copperbrook subdivision and intends the Charles W Austin Park to serve the dual purpose of alleviating downstream flooding issues (detention pond) and providing a public recreational area. Visitors to Charles W Austin Park might also be interested in Easton Commons Nature Park, another MUD park one block away. How to Find Charles W Austin Park Charles W Austin Park is located at the NE corner of West Rd and Huffmeister Rd in northwest Houston. The park is situated in the neighborhood of Copperbrook, about a mile south of US 290 and a half mile east of SH 6. There is no dedicated parking for the park. Park signs direct visitors to park at the Copperbrook Community Park/Pool parking lot one block away. Street parking is not allowed. Charles W Austin Park Features Charles W Austin Park picnic area The main feature of Charles W Austin Park is its’ paved walking trail that makes an approximately half mile loop around the detention basin. The trail has alternate basin bank (level ground) or basin bottom (sloped) sections allowing for different degrees of difficulty. Along the beautifully landscaped trail visitors will find numerous benches, a picnic area and exercise stations. While dogs are welcome, they must be leashed. Richard & Meg Weekley Park/Community Center View of Community Center from Trail Named for Houston area developer, Richard Weekley, and his wife Meg, the park serves numerous purposes. Opened in 2014, bringing the community together was a big consideration to Precinct 3 when planning projects such as this. The 21,000 SF Community Center serves the public’s need for a versatile meeting location with dance, fitness, arts & crafts and several other activities scheduled throughout the year. More information can be found on the Community Center Website. Improvements have been being made to the adjacent park area in the years since opening to the public. The park is easily accessible to the neighboring subdivisions via sidewalks, but plenty of parking is available both off Greenhouse Rd and Longenbaugh Rd. How to find Richard & Meg Weekley Park/Community Center Playground Richard & Meg Weekley Park/Community Center is located at 8440 Greenhouse Rd in Cypress TX, just northwest of Houston. A three mile drive to the east of the Grand Parkway and to the west of Hwy 6, approximately 4 miles south of US 290. Link to Park Website/Map Richard & Meg Weekley Park/Community Center Features While the community center is the main draw for visitors, the surrounding park can be enjoyed by patrons of all ages. The .85 miles of paved walking trail runs the length of the park along a portion of Langham Creek that has been partially dammed for flood control purposes. Benches are located along the paved trail with picturesque views of the wetland/wooded scenery of the property. At the time this article was written, visitors can use the unimproved footpath on the east side of Langham Creek. Future expansion of the paved trail around the pond is anticipated. The north end of the park (adjacent to the Community Center parking lot) has a playground with numerous picnic tables, both covered and not. The south end of the park (off Longenbaugh Rd) features a covered fitness area with covered picnic areas and swings. Kleb Woods Nature Preserve Kleb Woods Nature Preserve Nature Center Kleb Woods Nature Preserve is a Harris County owned park just northwest of Houston in the relatively rural, but emerging, city of Tomball. The park’s 133.5 Acres were once part of the Kleb family-run farm. The Klebs are known to be some of the earliest German immigrants to the area. The original Kleb home, barn and farming equipment can be seen along one of the park’s many walking trails. When back taxes landed the final Kleb heir (Elmer Kleb) in court, the property was obtained by the County thru collaboration with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Trust for Public Land. Elmer was allowed to live on his beloved wooded property until his death in 1999. In keeping with the unique history of the property, the County offers history discussion groups and German language classes on a regular basis. How to Find Kleb Woods Nature Preserve Kleb Woods Nature Preserve Park Layout Kleb Woods Nature Preserve is actually a combination of the Nature Center, located on the south side of the preserve property, and the Picnic and Scout Camping, located on the north side of the preserve property. The address for the Kleb Woods Nature Center is 20303 Draper Rd, Tomball, TX. Its’ parking lot can be found by going south on Mueschke Rd about half a mile off FM 2920. If the Nature Center is your destination, and hiking isn’t in your plans, this would be the easiest route. The address for the Kleb Woods Picnic and Scout Camping is 20605 FM 2920, Hockley, TX where parking can be found directly off FM 2920. The two sections of the preserve are connected by hiking trails. Kleb Woods Nature Preserve Features While the property’s natural setting has been kept relatively intact, the park offers restroom facilities, drinking fountains, a pavilion, picnic and barbecue facilities, walking and nature trails. The 1.13 miles of trails are mostly flat and shaded by the piney woods. With the exception of some brush and tree roots, the terrain is level and easy to navigate. Visitors should be aware that no pets are allowed in the park. Along the trails on the southern portion of the park off Draper Rd, visitors will find a historic farm and nature center with an auditorium and classroom. Tour groups are welcome. Adjacent to the parking lot on the northern portion of the park off FM 2920, picnic facilities and Scout campsites are easily accessible. Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve Fishing Pier The Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve is an 80 Acre public nature preserve located in northwest Houston TX. The park’s main feature is the 40 acre Marshall Lake and surrounding 1.7 miles of paved trail. Additionally, the property is bordered to the south by Cypress Creek. Visitors enjoy a rustic hidden retreat within the highly developed Tomball Parkway (SH 249) area of northwest Harris County. The Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve land was donated to Harris County Precinct 4 by its’ namesake companies in Jan 2009 during the creation of the master planned mixed use development known as The Vintage. Plans are underway to connect this preserve’s property with Precinct 3’s 100 Acre Wood Nature Preserve on the west side of SH 249, ultimately becoming part of the Cypress Creek Greenway Trail. Link to Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve Precinct 4 Website Park Map How to Find Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve The Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve is located in northwest Houston just east of the Tomball Parkway (SH 249) between Cypresswood Drive and Louetta Rd. It is bordered on the north by The Vintage development and on the south by Cypress Creek. The park’s main entrance, accessing ample parking, is off Chasewood Park Dr immediately east of SH249. Limited parking is also available at the park’s operations office on Cypresswood Dr. A pedestrian bridge allows visitors to cross Cypress Creek entering the preserve on the southeast side of Marshall Lake. Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve Features In addition to the 1.7 miles of paved trail encircling Marshall Lake, numerous access paths to the lake’s water edge have been created by pedestrian traffic. The park is popular with local cross country running teams as well as residents from neighboring subdivisions. A sand volleyball court, swings, restrooms with showers and water fountains can be found at the main parking area. Drinking water jugs (that are replenished by park staff) and adequate bench seating are provided along the trail for visitor refreshment. Fishing is allowed in Lake Marshall with a TX Parks & Wildlife Department fishing license. Visit Precinct 4’s website to learn more about their rules for fishing at the park. The County has constructed 2 sizable fishing piers and a canoe launch. Canoes must be non-motorized. A campground area is available for private reservation to nonprofit organizations. Reservations can be made by calling (281) 353-4196. The campground area is located just behind the restroom facilities and consists of a fire ring, BBQ grills, a covered pavilion and bench seating.
