Less than 10 miles outside of Cypress, the small town charm of Hockley, TX is evident in the Hockley Recreational Complex.  Amenities include a playground, hiking trail surrounding a fishing pond, a soap box derby track with bleacher seating & concession stand, and an amphitheater with an adjacent Community Center hosting various events for all ages.

How to Find the Hockley Recreational Complex

The Hockley Recreational Complex is an 18.5 acre park in Hockley, TX in northwest Harris County.   Traveling out US Hwy-290 approximately 5 miles west of the recently constructed Grand Parkway & exiting Hegar Road, the park entrance is off Old Washington Road which runs parallel to the train track to the south of the freeway.   Be forewarned that train activity may require you alter your path to the Kickapoo Road exit just one exit west of Hegar Rd.   Additional parking can be accessed from the west side of the park off Premium Drive.  Link to Park Map

  Hockley Recreational Complex Features

The Hockley Recreational Complex’s most prominent amenity is a full size replica of the Soap Box Derby World Championship Track in Akron, Ohio.   Beginning in 2010 this track has served as home for all “Greater Houston Soap Box Derby” events.   Periodic “public fun days” with free non-competitive rides for all ages (cars provided) are organized in cooperation with Harris County.

Other park amenities include a paved walking trail totaling 1.11 miles in length winding through the park & around a pond in the shape of a soap box derby car.   Two little islands within the pond serve as the car’s wheel hub caps.   Along the trail, visitors can enjoy a children’s playground area, gazebo, picnic & barbeque areas with restrooms.   Another unique perk of the park is an open air amphitheater with plenty of grass seating.

In addition to the park, Harris County owns a community center on the site.  Various meetings, activities and special events take place almost daily.    Visit the Hockley Community Center’s website for more information.
