The Hockley Recreational Complex is home to something no other Houston-area park can claim: a purpose-built soap box derby racing hill, the home track of the Greater Houston Soap Box Derby since 2010. Around it, Harris County Precinct 4 runs 45.66 acres of small-town park at 28515 Old Washington Rd — 1.7 miles of trail, a stocked fishing pond, an amphitheater, a playground, and a community center that’s busy nearly every day.
The soap box derby track
GHSBD — an all-volunteer nonprofit chartered in 1994 that helped the county design the hill — runs its full season here: Texas Top Gun Series rally races for drivers 7–17, driver training days, Super Kids events with dual-rider cars for children with disabilities (free), and the “Zero” Gravity Derby, where kids and adults can race a provided car for a small registration fee. Spectators watch free from the grandstands. If you remember the old “public fun days,” the Zero Gravity Derby is the modern version — check ghsbd.org for the season schedule.
What else you’ll find at the complex
The county’s amenity list: 1.7 miles of paved trail winding the park and around the fishing pond (Precinct 4 keeps it stocked), an open-air amphitheater, a playground, a gazebo, 24 picnic tables, five exercise stations, two shade pavilions, restrooms, and a concession stand at the track. Look at the pond from above sometime — when we photographed the park, its outline (islands and all) traced the shape of a derby car. Park hours are 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily; details on the official Precinct 4 park page. One local tip that hasn’t changed: the entrance is off Old Washington Rd along the rail line, so a stopped train may reroute you to the Kickapoo Rd exit one west of Hegar.
The Hockley Community Center (opened 1986) anchors the site with programming most days — fitness classes, meetings, kids’ activities, even free summer meals for kids in 2025, and cooling-center duty in the 2024 heat. Hours run Monday–Thursday 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; call (713) 274-3220.

Living near the Hockley Recreational Complex
Hockley still feels like small-town Texas — and that’s exactly why buyers priced out of closer-in Cypress keep looking here, with acreage properties and new communities filling in along US-290 west of the Grand Parkway. Zube Park and its miniature railroad are minutes away. Browse my Cypress neighborhood guides or search homes for sale in the Cypress area — and if Hockley’s pace sounds like yours, call or text me, Kevan Pewitt, at (281) 500-7077.
