Discovery Green is downtown Houston’s town square — 12 acres of lake, lawns, and shade between the George R. Brown Convention Center and the skyline that turned a stretch of parking lots into the city’s gathering place when it opened in 2008. Run by the nonprofit Discovery Green Conservancy, it hosts more than 600 free events a year and has counted over 20 million visitors — and it just spent June and July at the center of Houston’s World Cup summer.

What you’ll find at Discovery Green

The park runs 6 a.m.–11 p.m. daily. Kinder Lake anchors the middle: the kayaks of years past are retired, and the lake now runs bumper boats ($12) and electric cruiser boats ($25) through early September, with online tickets in advance. Kids get the Gateway Fountain splash jets (9 a.m.–7 p.m.) and the John P. McGovern Playground, rebuilt in a $2.3 million 2021 renovation; dogs get two runs of their own — the Kinder Large Dog Run and the Harriet and Joe Foster Small Dog Run. The Hagstette Family Putting Green is free, public art is everywhere — permanent works plus rotating installations, with the Conservancy’s new Art Lab fellowship now training Houston artists to add more. When the weather turns, Green Mountain Energy Ice takes over from late November to mid-February — about $18 with skate rental, on a rink flooded with water recycled from Kinder Lake — followed by a roller rink in spring. For dinner there’s The Grove, and the lakeside spot that used to be The Lake House is now Grove Market & Provisions, a grab-and-go from the same restaurant group. What’s new at Discovery Green

Houston’s seven FIFA World Cup matches ran at NRG Stadium June 14–July 4, 2026, and Discovery Green played host city right back — Saturday-morning pickup soccer, a Sunday concert series, and the marked Via Fútbol walking route linking the park to the official Fan Festival in EaDo. The bigger long-term story is next door: the $2 billion transformation of the George R. Brown announced in 2025 adds the 700,000-square-foot GRB Houston South (opening 2028) and extends Avenida Plaza south from the park, knitting Discovery Green into a much larger walkable convention district over the next decade.

Living near Discovery Green

This is one of the few Houston parks with high-rise neighbors on every side — the One Park Place apartment tower faces it across McKinney, the Marlowe condominiums sit a short walk west, and the Marriott Marquis (of Texas-shaped lazy river fame) borders the north edge, with the METRORail Green and Purple lines stopping at the park’s Convention District station. Discovery Green: quick answers

Can you still kayak on Kinder Lake?

No — the Conservancy retired the kayaks and pedal boats. The lake now offers bumper boats and five-passenger electric cruiser boats, running spring into early September with advance online tickets.

Is Discovery Green free to visit?

Yes — the park and most of its 600-plus annual events cost nothing. You’ll pay for the boats, ice skating, and dining, and there’s no free parking downtown: the park sits on an underground garage, with metered street spots around it.

When does the ice rink run?

Green Mountain Energy Ice runs late November through mid-February — the 2025–26 season was November 21 to February 16 — at about $18 including skates. In spring the same footprint hosts The Rink, a roller-skating pop-up.
