Cypress Top Historic Park is where Cypress keeps its history — 2.6 acres of original 19th- and early-20th-century buildings at 26026 Hempstead Rd, on the very ground where the 1850s railroad town of “Cypress Top” served travelers between Houston and Hempstead. Tucked behind the Fry Rd retail corridor just south of US-290, it’s an easy stop that most people who live here still haven’t discovered.

What you’ll find at Cypress Top Historic Park

The park preserves a remarkable cluster of authentic buildings on land donated to Harris County by descendants of the Juergen family, the site’s original owners: the Juergen family home, the Juergen General Store, a 1956 Humble Oil service station, Leon’s Barber Shop, the old railroad depot, a grist mill, and Juergen’s Hall — the historic German dance hall that now serves as a Harris County Precinct 3 community center (open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m., with rentals and programs; its walls double as a museum of historical photos). A picnic pavilion and restrooms round out the modern additions. The park itself was dedicated in November 2008.

The railroad depot houses the Darline Roth Research Library & Museum, run by the Cypress Historical Society — genealogy records for more than 300 area families, open Tuesday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Wednesday–Thursday mornings. Docent-led tours of the historic buildings are available by appointment through the Society.

What’s new at Cypress Top

The park stays lovingly maintained: in spring 2025 volunteers refreshed the Humble service station and barber shop, an Eagle Scout landscaping project followed that April, and in October 2025 the park got its first park-wide Christmas decorating — a joint effort by county staff and the Historical Society. If you visited years ago when tours ran on a fixed Tuesday schedule, note that tours are now by appointment.
