Rushing Park is 232 acres of Katy Prairie at 9114 Katy Hockley Rd — a Harris County Precinct 4 park built around the Chain of Lakes, more than 100 acres of interconnected shallow lakes that make this one of the best bird-watching spots in west Harris County. Add 2.83 miles of asphalt trails over wooden bridges, ballfields, cricket fields, a playground, and the Beverly Kaufman Dog Park, and you have the rare park that serves birders at dawn and softball families by evening.

What you’ll find at Paul Rushing Park

The Chain of Lakes is the heart of it — a stormwater project turned wetland habitat, ringed by trails with a boardwalk and six observation blinds. Houston Audubon’s checklist for the park runs past 200 recorded species, and Texas Parks & Wildlife puts it on the Katy Prairie Loop of its Great Texas Wildlife Trails: whistling-ducks and black-necked stilts in summer, waterfowl and shorebirds through fall and winter, even a wintering bald eagle. The gated Beverly Kaufman Dog Park (dawn to dusk) has separate areas for big and small dogs — the small-dog side is for 20 pounds and under.

The sports side is just as busy: the baseball/softball complex serves as home fields for the Katy Girls Softball Association, and the cricket fields are something you won’t find at most county parks.
