Congressman Bill Archer Dog Park is west Houston’s purpose-built dog destination — 17 fenced acres of Harris County Precinct 4 parkland on Hwy 6, split into separate large-dog and small-dog worlds, each with its own swimming pond, walking loop, and agility course. It’s named for Bill Archer, who represented west Houston in Congress for three decades and passed away in July 2026 at age 98 — and among Houston dog owners, the park that carries his name is about as famous as he was.

What you’ll find at Bill Archer Dog Park

The large-dog side covers most of the acreage with a 0.81-mile walking loop; the small-dog side gets its own 0.29-mile loop. Both have ponds built for dog swimming — the bone-shaped cement ponds we photographed are the park’s signature — plus agility equipment, six drinking fountains, five shade pavilions, sixteen benches, and restrooms, with two dog-wash stations by the exits (bring shampoo and towels; you’ll want them). County rules on the official Precinct 4 park page: dogs need to be at least four months old with current vaccinations and tags, two dogs max per person, and off-leash only inside the gates. Hours are 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily (closed Thanksgiving, December 24–25, and January 1). Sharing the parking lot is the free, unsupervised Addicks Skate Park with ramps, rails, and street features.

What’s changed at Bill Archer Dog Park

Two updates since our first write-up. The park moved from Precinct 3 to Precinct 4 in the county’s 2022 redistricting — it’s now managed alongside Bear Creek Pioneers Park across the highway, with Precinct 4’s standard hours and rules. And its namesake, Congressman Bill Archer — who held the west Houston seat from 1971 to 2001 and chaired the House Ways and Means Committee — died July 5, 2026, at 98. The park remains exactly what it’s been for years: the gold standard for off-leash space on this side of town.

Bill Archer Dog Park: quick answers

Can dogs really swim there?

Yes — each fenced area has its own pond built for exactly that, and on warm weekends the splashing never stops. Wash stations sit just outside the gates, so pack shampoo and towels and let them go all in.

What are the rules?

Dogs must be at least four months old with current vaccinations and license tags, two dogs per person maximum, leashed in and out of the gates, and supervised the whole visit. Precinct 4 doesn’t recommend bringing children under 9 into the dog areas.

Is there anything for people without dogs?

The free Addicks Skate Park shares the parking lot, and Bear Creek Pioneers Park — 2,154 acres of ball fields, trails, and the free aviary — is directly across Hwy 6. Between the two, this stretch of highway covers the whole family.
