Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth Park on Horsepen Creek is 188 acres of Precinct 3 parkland built around a fishing lake in the heart of Cy-Fair. Opened as Horsepen Creek Park, it was renamed in September 2015 to honor Deputy Darren Goforth, a ten-year Harris County Sheriff’s Office veteran killed in the line of duty that August less than two miles away — his widow asked that a park, a place families use every day, carry his name. It does the name proud: this is a park the whole northwest side seems to use — walkers, anglers, and dogs alike.

What you’ll find at Goforth Park

The lake is the centerpiece, with a 1.97-mile paved loop around it inside 3.3 total miles of trail, exercise stations along the way, shaded picnic tables, and a playground side (9118 Wheat Cross Dr) with climbing structures, swings, and restrooms. The dog park side (9402 Barker Cypress Rd) has separate fenced areas for large and small dogs — complete with lake access where dogs actually swim, wash stations by the gates, and agility equipment. Fishing is better than a detention lake has any right to be: Texas Parks & Wildlife stocks channel catfish nearly every year (2,111 in 2025) and added 75 adult ShareLunker-strain largemouth bass in 2024; the lake-record largemouth is 5.5 pounds. Hours run roughly 7 a.m. to dusk, and the county does lock the parking-lot gates at close — details through the Precinct 3 parks department.

What’s new at Goforth Park

The lake got a serious job promotion in 2025: Precinct 3 and the Harris County Flood Control District brought a $4.5 million stormwater pump station project to the lake — construction ran through 2025 — designed to let crews pump the lake down ahead of major storms and free up roughly 250 acre-feet of extra detention for the Horsepen Creek watershed — the same pre-release playbook as Cypress Park’s system, and a real benefit to the neighborhoods downstream. Precinct 3’s parks master plan also pencils in fishing piers, more shade trees, and replaced picnic tables for the park in the years ahead.

Yes — TPWD lists the lake as “Deputy Darren Goforth Park Lake” and stocks it with channel catfish nearly every year, plus ShareLunker-strain bass in 2024. Anyone 17 or older needs a Texas freshwater license; check current harvest rules with Precinct 3 before keeping fish.

Is there a dog park?

Two — separate fenced areas for large and small dogs on the Barker Cypress side, both with lake swimming access, agility equipment, and wash stations by the gates. Bring towels; your dog will use the lake.

Who was Darren Goforth?

A ten-year Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy killed in the line of duty in August 2015 at a Cypress gas station near West and Telge roads. Commissioners Court renamed the park in his honor that September at his family’s request.
