Kleb Woods Nature Preserve is 133.5 acres of piney woods on the Tomball–Cypress border with the best backstory of any park in this directory: it exists because Elmer Kleb, a hermit naturalist who spent his whole life on the family farm — much of it without electricity — let his fields grow back into forest and nearly lost it all to back taxes. Today it’s a Harris County Precinct 4 preserve with nearly 4 miles of flat, shaded trails, a working nature center, the restored 1896 Kleb farmhouse — and some of the most reliable birding in northwest Harris County.

What you’ll find at Kleb Woods

The preserve has two entrances: the Kleb Woods Nature Center and historic farm buildings at 20303 Draper Rd (off Mueschke Rd, half a mile south of FM 2920), and the picnic and Scout-camping area at 20605 FM 2920 on the Hockley side, with the two halves connected by trail. The 3.86 miles of nature trails are level and shaded — easy walking for kids and grandparents alike. The preserve is open 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily; the nature center and farmhouses run Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. One rule that surprises first-timers: no dogs, even on a leash — the county keeps the preserve wildlife-first. Scout campsites reserve through Precinct 4; call the nature center at (281) 357-5324 for programs.

The programming is the quiet star here: free bird walks every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. (plus the first Saturday of each month at 8 a.m., no registration needed), history discussion groups, school nature classes, farm tours, star parties with the Houston Astronomical Society, and a bluegrass jam the fourth Saturday of every month. Each September the Hummingbird Festival takes over the preserve — the 2025 edition was the 17th annual, complete with hummingbird banding demonstrations and tours of the Kleb House.

The Elmer Kleb story

The Klebs were German immigrants who arrived in Texas in 1846 and bought the farm near Mueschke Rd in 1871. Elmer Kleb was born in the farmhouse in 1907 and never really left — after inheriting the place in 1967 he lived alone without utilities, stopped farming, and let the land return to native woodland, feeding the birds while the tax bill grew past $150,000. When the county moved to sell the property in the late 1980s, a Texas Parks & Wildlife grant let Harris County buy the land instead in 1991 — paying the taxes and funding a trust that let Elmer live out his days on his beloved woods. He died in 1999 at 91, and the county restored the homestead and opened the preserve. The Kleb Family House is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
