George Bush Park
George Bush Park in Houston TX, formerly “Cullen-Barker Park,” in far West Houston covers 7,800 Acres and was created in the 1940’s on property, within the Barker Reservoir, serving to prevent downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou. The public park & wildlife sanctuary hosts a broad range of amenities for visitors including trails, an area for dogs, a shooting range, sports fields & picnic spots.How to Find George Bush Park
Harris County’s George Bush Park is located just west of State Highway-6 and approximately 2 miles east of the Grand Parkway. The park is on Westheimer Parkway, accessed by car off Westheimer Rd (FM 1093) from the east, through Cinco Ranch on the west and from S. Barker Cypress Rd on the south. Due to the wetlands’ nature of the park, there is no direct road access from the north, however trail parking is located at Harris County’s Sports Park off the I-10 south feeder road at Barker Clodine Rd. Trail parking also exists at Hwy 6 & Buffalo Bayou, Hwy-6 and Briar Forest Dr and within the park on the northern dead-end of S. Barker Cypress Rd.
George Bush Park Features
Visitors can enjoy anywhere from a 1/3 mile to a 3+ mile paved trail. Altogether there are over 11 miles of trails within the George Bush Park. Link to Park Map The Park’s trail system ties into that of Terry Hershey Park along Buffalo Bayou to the east for a total of 22 miles of Hike & Bike trails.
In addition to the extensive trail system meandering through open green space, swamps & forest, the park is home to 2 soccer complexes and one baseball complex that serve local area clubs and the public . Pavilions, picnic areas, a playground, and restrooms are scattered throughout the park. A dog park with 2 separate areas for large/small dogs is located on the east side of the property. Unique to George Bush Park are the American Shooting Center’s shooting range and the Scobee Memorial model airplane fields. Both are run independently from Harris County and open to the public. Visitors should be aware that the park is subject to flooding at any time. The park is part of a federally owned reservoir and it is the priority of the Army Corps of Engineers to impound water when necessary.
