Matzke Park is 20 acres of genuine neighborhood park — the kind where a garden club has tended the butterfly garden for nearly two decades, cricket claims the field for league play, and the playscape was designed so every kid can use it. Now run by Harris County Precinct 3, it sits between Jones Road and Copeland Road next to Bleyl Middle School, ringed by the subdivisions that treat it as their backyard.
What you’ll find at Matzke Park
A 0.7-mile paved loop with fitness stations follows the park’s edge, wrapping around an accessible playscape, a gazebo and shaded picnic areas, restrooms, a drinking fountain, and a batting cage. The cricket field is the active field sport here — the Triggers Cricket Club calls Matzke home, and youth-league cricket shares its calendar. The park’s signature, though, is the butterfly garden at the south end: the Norchester Garden Club and the Association for Better Community Schools built it starting in 2007 and still maintain it, including a Never Forget Garden planted to honor veterans. Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily; reservations and programs run through the Precinct 3 parks department.
What’s changed at Matzke Park
If you knew this park years ago, two updates. Matzke Elementary no longer sits next door — the school moved to a new Mills Road campus in 2017, and the old building beside the park is now Cy-Fair ISD’s Brautigam Center, a school-of-choice campus for older students. And the soccer fields of the old days have given way to cricket on the county’s current amenity list. Looking ahead, Precinct 3’s parks master plan tags Matzke for drainage improvements as a short-term priority, plus parking-lot resurfacing, and the precinct has sidewalk plans in the works for the streets around the park.

Matzke Park: quick answers
Who takes care of the butterfly garden?
Volunteers — the Norchester Garden Club with the Association for Better Community Schools have built and tended it since 2007. It’s a working demonstration garden, and the club’s Never Forget Garden inside it honors veterans with white roses, blue salvia, and a magnolia.
Is there still soccer at Matzke Park?
Not on the county’s current amenity list — cricket is the field sport now, with the Triggers Cricket Club and youth leagues playing regularly. The open grass is still there for a casual kickabout outside match times.
Is the playground accessible?
Yes — the playscape was designed so children of all abilities can play, with shade structures nearby. Between it, the batting cage, and the loop trail, the park covers a lot of ages in 20 acres.
