American Statesmanship Park is the smallest park in Harris County — about a third of an acre — holding some of its biggest art: four 18-foot, two-ton white concrete busts of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Houston, and Stephen F. Austin, staring out over the I-10/I-45 interchange. Houston sculptor David Adickes created the heads in 2008 and donated them to the county in 2012, and his nickname for the spot stuck: Mount Rush Hour, for the roughly three million vehicles that pass the presidents every week.

What you’ll find at Mount Rush Hour

This is a stop, not a day out — a small landscaped overlook where the payoff is standing at the feet of the heads you’ve glimpsed from the freeway a hundred times, with the downtown skyline stacked behind them. That combination makes it one of the city’s favorite oddball photo backdrops: engagement shoots, album covers, out-of-town visitors who want the Houston-est picture possible. Adickes is the same sculptor behind the 67-foot Sam Houston statue on I-45 in Huntsville, and the heads carry his signature roadside-colossus style. The park is open dawn to dusk and costs nothing.

Finding it

The trick is that you can’t get there from the freeway you see it from. Take Houston Avenue to Edwards Street heading east; after a few blocks Edwards curves and becomes Elder Street, and the park sits at 1400 Elder, tucked behind the interchange. Park along the street, take your photos, and you’re back in the car in twenty minutes — ideally paired with a coffee stop in the Heights or a walk at nearby Buffalo Bayou Park.
