The Houston Zoo is 55 acres inside Hermann Park holding more than 6,000 animals across 900-plus species — and with roughly 2.1 million visitors a year, it ranks among the most-visited zoos in the country. The headline since 2023 is the Galápagos Islands exhibit, the first of its kind in any U.S. zoo: giant tortoises, Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and a 270,000-gallon ocean tank recreating the archipelago a few miles from the Medical Center. Every ticket funds the Zoo’s wildlife-saving work in the field.

What you’ll find at the Houston Zoo

Beyond the Galápagos, the campus loops through African Forest (gorillas, chimps, rhinos), the elephant habitat with its pool-side viewing, big cats, sea lions, a walk-through bird aviary, and the children’s zoo with its water play area — the reason every Houston parent keeps a change of clothes in the car. Timed-entry tickets are sold online, members skip the ticket line entirely, and the carousel and train add the small-kid magic. Hours shift seasonally — in August 2026 the Zoo runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, opening early to beat the heat — so check the current schedule before you go. Living near the Houston Zoo
