Buffalo Bayou Park is Houston’s signature green space — 160 acres of trails, lawns, and public art running along both banks of the bayou between Shepherd Drive and Sabine Street, with the downtown skyline as its constant backdrop. Managed by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, it packs an amphitheater park, a famous dog park, an underground cistern, and one of Texas’s best-known urban bat colonies into one stretch of water — and it was engineered to flood and bounce back, which it has proven more than once.

What you’ll find at Buffalo Bayou Park

Paved and soft-surface trails run the length of the park on both banks, linked by footbridges — runners, cyclists, and skyline photographers all get their money’s worth. Eleanor Tinsley Park is the “park within the park”: the big amphitheater lawn facing downtown, the Nau Family Pavilion, and a rentable sand volleyball court. Johnny Steele Dog Park (open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily) gives dogs ponds to swim in, with dog-wash stations near the entrances. Paddlers put in at the boat launches, and kayak and bike rentals operate near The Water Works at Sabine Street. The park itself is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

The Cistern and the bats

Two attractions here exist nowhere else in Houston. The Cistern is a 1926 underground drinking-water reservoir — a forest of concrete columns over still water — reborn as a tour and art space; guided visits run Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ($15 general, $12 seniors, students, and military; tickets through the Partnership). And at Waugh Drive, a colony the Partnership estimates at roughly 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats emerges at dusk — the Texas Parks & Wildlife bat-watching site is one of the few urban colonies with its own viewing platform, and volunteer Bat Chats run the first and third Friday evenings of the month, starting 30 minutes before sunset.
