George Bush Park is the biggest park most Houstonians have never seen all of — 7,800 acres of Harris County Precinct 4 land filling the Barker Reservoir west of Hwy 6, home to 11.36 miles of hike-and-bike trail, the Millie Bush Dog Park, a full shooting-sports complex, a model-aircraft airfield, and soccer fields that just joined the FIFA World Cup 2026 legacy program. Renamed for President George H.W. Bush in 1997 (he attended the ceremony), it’s equal parts wilderness, sports hub, and flood infrastructure.

What you’ll find at George Bush Park

The paved trail runs 11.36 miles through prairie, swamp, and forest, tying into Terry Hershey Park at Barker Dam for a combined ride of about 22 miles along Buffalo Bayou. The Millie Bush Dog Park — named for the Bushes’ English springer spaniel, the White House “First Dog” — gives off-leash dogs about 9 acres with separate big/small sides, swimming ponds, and paw-wash stations. American Shooting Centers operates 563 acres of trap, skeet, sporting clays, and rifle/pistol ranges inside the park (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), and the Bayou City Flyers fly the Dick Scobee Memorial Airfield. Add equestrian trails (one of only two Precinct 4 parks that allow horses), three reservable pavilions off S. Barker Cypress, a Buffalo Bayou boardwalk, playgrounds, fishing, and Scout camping. What’s new at George Bush Park

The soccer complex is getting a World Cup boost: in February 2026 the park was named a site in Houston’s FIFA 2026 “Grow the Game” legacy initiative, bringing new pitches ahead of the tournament. The baseball fields are temporarily closed for construction as of mid-2026, and in March 2026 the Flood Control District broke ground on a $10 million Barker Reservoir channel rehabilitation — maintenance that keeps the reservoir doing its quiet job. As always here: the park sits inside a federal flood-control reservoir and floods by design after major storms, with low areas closing until the water drains.
