John Paul Landing Park is the biggest greenspace on the west side of Cypress — 876 acres at 24202 West Rd, about 2 miles west of the Grand Parkway, built around a 176-acre fishing lake that a newly completed wetland has pushed to roughly 200 acres of water. Operated by Harris County Precinct 4, it pairs 7.8 miles of hike-and-bike trail with its own environmental education center, and it sits just minutes from Bridgeland and Towne Lake.

What you’ll find at John Paul Landing Park

Fishing is still the headline. The lake is a designated Texas community fishing lake — pole-and-line only, two poles per person, with bluegill, channel catfish, and largemouth bass; TPWD rules apply. The southeast portion of the lake is open to kayaks and other non-motorized boats (Coast Guard-approved life jacket required, boating 7 a.m.–7:30 p.m.). On land there are playground structures, picnic areas, exercise stations, four reservable pavilions, pickleball courts, and — something you won’t find at many Houston-area parks — three cricket fields. On the north side of the lake at 9950 Katy Hockley Rd, the John Paul Landing Environmental Education Center (opened February 2020) runs a hands-on Discovery Room for kids, school field trips, fishing camps, guided bird walks, and prairie programs, Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

What’s new at John Paul Landing

In March 2025 the county completed a 75-acre stormwater detention basin connected directly to the lake — it added flood protection for the surrounding area, over 40,000 native plants, habitat that draws 200-plus bird species, and Discovery Cove, a 10-acre outdoor classroom with ADA-accessible trails. In January 2025, Precinct 4 also won a $468,724 Texas Parks & Wildlife grant to upgrade the education center with new interactive exhibits. The county keeps investing here, and the west-Cypress neighborhoods around it are growing just as fast.
