The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is 155 acres of native Texas landscape on the western edge of Memorial Park — a non-profit nature sanctuary where prairie, savanna, wetland, and woodland habitats sit minutes from the Galleria and the Loop. After Hurricane Ike and the 2011 drought hit the old forest hard, the Arboretum rebuilt itself around a master plan that restored the land to the mosaic of ecosystems this part of Texas actually had — which is why a walk here now moves from open meadow to pond boardwalk to shaded woods in a single loop.

What you’ll find at the Arboretum

Miles of walking trails loop through the grounds — flat, stroller-manageable, and dog-friendly on leash — with boardwalks over the wetlands, a treehouse-style overlook, and the meadow trails that turn gold in fall. The Nature Center building hosts exhibits, camps, and classes, and the McGovern Education Campus anchors the year-round program calendar. It’s the quiet counterweight to Memorial Park proper: no ballfields, no crowds at the running loop, just habitat — and some of the best casual bird and wildlife spotting inside the Loop.

Hours, admission, and parking

Admission is free. The grounds and trails are open daily 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the Nature Shop runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is $6.50 — free on Thursdays, on the second Sunday of each month, and year-round for Arboretum members, whose dues help fund the sanctuary.

Does the Arboretum cost anything?

Admission is free every day. Parking is $6.50, waived on Thursdays, on the second Sunday of each month, and for members — so a weekly visit habit costs less than most gym memberships even before you join.

Are dogs allowed at the Arboretum?

Yes, on leash, on the outdoor trails — it’s one of the better close-in dog walks precisely because the trails are unpaved and shaded. Check the Arboretum’s visitor policies for the current rules before bringing your dog to any programmed event.

How is this different from Memorial Park?
