Telge Park is 111 acres of woods and wetland on the north bank of Cypress Creek at 12400 Pleasant Grove Rd — a Harris County Precinct 3 park that looks like a small neighborhood playground from the parking lot and turns into a real nature preserve once you’re on the trails. It also holds one of the best history footnotes in Cypress: Sam Houston’s Texas Army camped on this ground on April 16, 1836, five days before the Battle of San Jacinto.

What you’ll find at Telge Park

The developed corner has a fenced playground, a covered pavilion with electrical service, charcoal grills, picnic tables, restrooms, and a small parking lot (street parking runs along Pleasant Grove Rd). From there, roughly three-quarters of a mile of natural-surface trail loops through densely wooded acreage, with a boardwalk over the wetland near the trailhead and side spurs winding down to Cypress Creek, where fishing is allowed. Deer and birdlife are regulars. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk; Harris County Precinct 3’s parks page covers reservations and contacts. One caution that hasn’t changed: most of the acreage sits in the Cypress Creek floodplain, so trails can be muddy or impassable after big rains.

A San Jacinto campaign campsite

The Texas Historical Commission marker at Pleasant Grove and Telge marks the Matthew Burnett homesite — Burnett settled here on Cypress Creek in 1831, and in April 1836 roughly 1,100 men of Sam Houston’s army camped at the site on their march to San Jacinto. Precinct 3’s 2023 parks master plan also earmarked Telge Park for upgrades — playground climbers, boardwalk repairs, and converting the gravel trail to asphalt — so expect improvements over time. Across Telge Rd, Bud Hadfield Park adds another 54 acres with disc golf and its own creek fishing, making this corner of Cypress a two-park stop.
