Charles W Austin Park is a neighborhood utility district doing parks right — Harris County MUD 130, the district serving Copperbrook and Hanover, turned the community’s stormwater basin at West Road and Huffmeister into a landscaped half-mile walking loop that gets real daily use. It’s never going to be Bear Creek, and it doesn’t need to be: this is the after-dinner-walk park for the streets around it.

The paved loop is the whole show, and it comes with a choice: walk the level top of the basin bank, or drop to the sloped basin-floor sections for a little grade in famously flat Houston. Benches, a picnic area, and exercise stations line the way, and the Dave Cooney Pavilion — added since our first visit, with a built-in cooking area — can be reserved through the district (propane grills only, applications about two weeks ahead). Dogs are welcome on leash. Hours are posted district-wide: 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, per the park rules on the MUD 130 website. One quirk to know: there’s no dedicated parking lot — signs point visitors to the Copperbrook community pool lot a block away, and street parking isn’t allowed.
