Zube Park is the park families drive out to Hockley for — 225 acres of Harris County Precinct 4 parkland at 17560 Roberts Rd, a mile north of US-290, best known as home of the Houston Area Live Steamers, who give free rides on their miniature railroad the third Saturday of every month, March through November. Add nearly 3 miles of trails, a summer splash pad, a disc golf course, soccer fields, and fishing, and you can see why an estimated 50,000 visitors a year make the trip.

The miniature railroad

The Houston Area Live Steamers — a volunteer nonprofit running since 1991 — operate their Cypress Creek & Southern Railroad along the park’s north side, with real working ride-on-scale locomotives — steam engines included. Public run days are the third Saturday of each month, March–November (plus select Sundays): rides are free, about a mile long and 12–15 minutes, no reservations needed. One practical note — riders straddle the cars and must board unassisted, with a 350-pound weight limit, so check HALS’s run-day page before planning a trip around it.

What else you’ll find at Zube Park

The county’s current amenity list runs long: 2.96 miles of hike-and-bike trail with exercise stations, a seasonal splash pad (open for summer 2026 — the county even extended hours to 8 a.m.–8 p.m. in the July heat), a disc golf course, fishing, a playground, picnic areas, two reservable pavilions, and the soccer field complex now used by Dynamos Soccer (the club formerly known as Cy-Fair Youth Soccer merged into it). Two bits of background worth knowing. The land has history: the Zube family farmed here starting with Carl “Charles” Friedrich Zube’s 117-acre purchase in 1867. And the park works hard when it rains — the Flood Control District’s Zube stormwater basin along Little Cypress Creek holds some 272 million gallons, and in February 2025 it became the site of the largest tree planting in HCFCD history: 8,300 trees plus 2,500 black-willow stakes.
